Find the Right Financial Advisor for Planning Your Long Term Investment Goals

Tracking Investment Performance

This is my approach to building a portfolio. Instead of investing more of my own money, I use tools to improve how I track and measure investment performance. I read about the Schwab Intelligent Portfolios and Eleven and started following links and reading the information, like this website by money.usnews.com. What caught my attention is the tracking of investment performance. This is not specific to a given fund or index, but the idea that investing activity is tracked and graphed by time frame and fund. It’s great for visualizing the difference in an investment strategy over time.

This concept is even better when applied to investment returns. The task is figuring out a portfolio return that is better than the market return with a given amount of money invested and set aside with a consistent schedule. Now, depending on the timeframe, the difference will only be negative if there’s a large decline in the stock market.

Editor’s Note: Von’s suggestion of changing the name of your portfolio to reflect the activity in your investments (e.g. “Tom Von Reckers Fast Money Index” instead of “Tom Von Reckers Inflation Index”) came up in one of our online polls. In an effort to limit personal responses, Tom selected only a select few of the other suggestions that were submitted.
