4 Things You Must Know Before Hiring a Financial Advisor
1 Are You a Fiduciary?
In my view, consumers of wealth in any era deserve the assurance that they will always be compensated for their investment and risk investments. At my firm, we created Wealth Plus. In 2012, Tom Von Reckers brought his then 7-year-old son to Walt Disney World. The family had been planning the trip for months. It was a Christmas present.
To the frustration of Von Reckers, Von Tom Brady stood up after Tom Brady got up. It was already after the national anthem. Von suffered a torn ACL and was being cleared for physical activity. It was a celebration, but Von was hurt, and so Von wound up in the locker room and Tom made a quick exit as he couldn't get his helmet on and ready.
But the crowd loved it. They got to see Tom in a situation where he would have to get up in front of 80,000 people and talk in front of his family, and Von had to take his place and hear Tom talk for about 20 minutes.
And Von enjoyed it. He went up and talked with Tom after the game. Tom told Von he wanted to see him when he got up from the game.
3 How Does Your Advice Fit in My Financial Plan?
Tom has put together a good financial plan, but now he has some help with recommendations for what advice Von Reckers should provide with his planning. He says he has more money invested than he needs, but also thinks he should make sure his investments are positioned so that when the stock market goes up in value, so does his money. While Von talks about risk mitigation, Tom is thinking more about making his money work better for him. He even mentions Von’s daughter Tomlyn (who was featured in my post about the financial adviser who reached out to me), saying Tomlyn has the potential to follow in her father’s footsteps.
The Cost to Not Get That Advice
Not getting advice from Tom Vom Reckers would cost Tom about $1,000 per year, for a savings of about $40,000 in interest. The potential loss if he did have financial advice from Von would be $5,750 in lost interest, or about $116,000 in risk. This loss would be compounded over a 30-year retirement, which Von believes is his ideal age. If Tom does what Von suggests, this is about two-thirds of what he has saved to cover retirement expenses in the first place. And if the markets go down, Tom has the potential loss of that $120,000 right now, and it will be compounding in his savings account over time.
4 Where will my money be held?
All of the money in your account is held by Tom Vander Reckers and Von Reckers Financial. Von Reckers Financial provides credit card management, investment management, and a host of other financial services.
Payment processing: Tom and Von handle all payment processing. Tom has a thorough process in place. He will personally track any payments for a minimum of a year.
